I’m Back! My Thoughts on the Movie Blade

Sorry it has been so very long since I’ve posted. Life got in the way! I worked a very intense job this spring, then my daughter graduated, we went on a cruise, then it was her 18th birthday…it’s just been a busy, hectic time around here. But I’m back and have so many fun things to share about my adventures over the past few months.

This post is a start of a new series. My husband and I have been watching DVDs from Netflix since 2000. When most of the rest of the world has switched to streaming only, we still get DVDs as well because there is SO much more selection and can have access to older titles and classics that you just can’t find anywhere else.

We watched the movie Blade last night. Like Netflix, Blade is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. After reading an interesting article in Entertainment Weekly this week (check it out here: Blade oral history: Wesley Snipes and the cast look back at a modern cult classic) we decided to get the movie and watch it (Again? For the first time? We cannot remember). According to the article, at the time this movie was made, Marvel was in bankruptcy. They had sold the rights to the X-Men, Spider Man, and some others, and so this is a Marvel movie, not made by Marvel, in order for them to make a bit of money to avoid folding completely. Kind of amazing when you look to what a huge thing the Marvel universe is now, but I think that has a lot to do with many factors, including the influx of money from Disney.

I must admit, I’m not a big vampire fan. I didn’t like Twilight at all, but also have never been a fan of any of the Dracula iterations or anything of the like. Yet Blade is a really well done movie, and its story truly stands the test of time. As a whole, the special effects are decent, although in many cases they are what shows the age the most because CGI has improved so much in the past twenty years with digital/HD/other techie things. Regardless, the gory sequences were plenty gory enough to make me say “Ew” and shudder, so they aren’t too cheesy or unrealistic.

Blade is played by Wesley Snipes, and he is a half-vampire, half-human hybrid. The movie itself has some incredibly gruesome moments, some jump-startle shocks, and some amazing action and martial arts sequences. This movie was definitely ahead of its time with its style and cinematography, which makes it a treat to watch even twenty years later. I typically read or play on my phone during movies like this because they don’t keep my attention with so many fight scenes, but the storyline in Blade drew me in and kept me watching.

This is definitely one to watch again, you can buy the trilogy on Blu-Ray:

Blade is rated R for strong, pervasive vampire violence and gore, language, and brief sexuality.
