Review: You Will Remember Me by Hannah Mary McKinnon

Coming on the heels of last year’s Sister Dear , McKinnon is making a name for herself with some intriguing clever thrillers. This one has a gripping amnesia storyline, and so will be perfect for armchair sleuths to learn what is going on right along with the main characters.

You Will Remember Me is a May 2021 release from MIRA Publishers

About the Book:

He wakes up on a deserted beach in Maryland, wearing only swim trunks and a gash on his head. He can’t remember who he is. Everything—his identity, his life, his loved ones—has been replaced by a dizzying fog of uncertainty. But returning to his Maine hometown in search of the truth raises more questions than answers.

Lily Reid thinks she knows her boyfriend, Jack. Until he goes missing one night, and her frantic search reveals that he’s been lying to her since they met, desperate to escape a dark past he’d purposely left behind.

Maya Scott has been trying to find her estranged stepbrother, Asher, since he disappeared without a trace. Having him back, missing memory and all, feels like a miracle. But with a mutual history full of devastating secrets, how far will Maya go to ensure she alone takes them to the grave?

My Thoughts:

This is a decent psychological thriller if you’re ok with not liking any of the characters.

The premise grabbed me from the beginning–man wakes up on a beach and has no idea who he is, he has complete amnesia. He is one of our narrators, real name Ash and name he has been going by is Jack. The second POV is from his girlfriend Lily, who realizes that he is missing and is frantic, calls the police, they all hit dead ends because he has disappeared into thin air. Ash/Jack remembers enough flashes of his past to connect with our third POV, his stepsister Maya. What happens from here are many outrageous things, some occasionally unbelievable and outright wild.

I pretty much figured out from the beginning where it was going, and I wasn’t wrong. However the ending definitely elevated this beyond the realm of complete predictability, because I really did not see the ending coming. Thus, even though I didn’t like any of the POV characters, I can recommend this book for those who like psychological suspense because even though you think you know what is going to happen you really don’t know!
