There are quite a few books I’m looking forward to reading this fall! This is part two featuring Mainstream Fiction releases. The next posts will feature Mystery/Suspense/Thrillers, Non-fiction, and Young Adult. You can also check out the Christian Fiction page.
Some of these I have already read for review in another publication, I will post the reviews and links as soon as they are live, but know that everything I’m choosing to post is highly recommended. Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery is the third book in Jenny Colgan’s adorable series set in the seaside town of Mount Polbearne. You don’t necessarily need to read the first two books in the series, but you might get lost in all of the character connections if you don’t. The first two books are:
Side note: the UK covers for these books are much better and more representative of the actual content. Polly bakes bread, not cupcakes, so I think these US covers actually do the books a disservice, even though they are cute.
In this latest (and supposedly final installment of the series, but Colgan hasn’t thoroughly committed to that) Polly and Huckle are discussing marriage and potentially moving toward having a family. Polly isn’t so sure, since money is a huge issue. Her friend Kerensa announces some big news, but also reveals a secret to Polly and swears her to secrecy. The resolution is heartwarming and everything one has come to expect from this series. If you haven’t read the others, it is totally worth your while, they are great stories with delectably described food.

Little Fires Everywhere is the latest by Celeste Ng and is getting quite a bit of buzz.
In a suburb of Chicago, Elena Richardson leads a structured life with her husband and four children. Then single mother Mia Warren and her teenage daughter Pearl rent a house from the Richardsons and everything begins to change. Mia is different from Elena in every way, and the Richardson children enjoy spending time with the Warrens. A friend of the Richardsons decides to adopt a Chinese-American baby and the ensuing battle divides Mia and Elena. Secrets abound and the cost of both finding out the secrets and keeping them private could be devastating.

Sourdough is the newest novel by Robin Sloan, the author of the amazing Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. 
I adore books about books, so Mr. Penumbra was a fabulous read for me, and this one seems like it will be an homage to food instead (another one of my favorite topics in fiction).
Sourdough features Lois Clary, a software engineer who basically does nothing except work. When she does go home, she orders food from one particular restaurant. When the brothers who run the restaurant are deported, they leave Lois with their prized sourdough culture, with strict instructions that she is to care for it, feed it, and bake with it. Lois knows nothing about baking, but sets out to learn. After she becomes somewhat accomplished, she desires to break into the world of selling bread, and discovers that the path to self-fulfillment might not be so easy.

Seven Days of Us looks to be an engaging family saga by debut fiction author Francesca Hornak. An entire family gathers together for Christmas in an English manor house only to find out that one of the siblings, Olivia, has to be quarantined for a week. This means that the entire family is stuck together for seven days, causing some heated tempers and some comical situations to arise. Family dramas with a sprinkling of humor are entertaining reads, so I’m definitely anxious to check this one out.

French author Marc Levy (Best known for the wonderful If Only It Were True, which was made into the movie Just Like Heaven, but the book was SO much better) has two novels releasing in the US this fall. All Those Things We Never Said comes out November 14, and P.S. From Paris comes out September 1.
All Those Things We Never Said: Julia Walsh is about to get married when she is notified that her estranged father has died. He then shows up on her doorstep, wanting to make amends and to forge a relationship with her. Julia and her father embark on a trip that will help them to connect and say the things they never could when he was alive.
P.S. From Paris: Mia is a famous actress with a cheating husband. She escapes from England to Paris in order to regroup and reassess. Paul is an author from America trying to figure out what to do next. The two get set up via a dating website, and things get…complicated.
Both novels seem lighthearted and introspective, diving into what defines love, friendship, and family.

George & Lizzie is the fiction debut of NPR book commentator, librarian Nancy Pearl, well known for her Book Lust series and her numerous speaking engagements celebrating books and libraries. George and Lizzie are a married couple who have different points of view about love and marriage. They come from radically different backgrounds and experiences. Years pass, and George is happy, Lizzie is not. It takes a secret from the past coming to light for the two to examine what exactly marriage means to them, both as individuals and as a couple.
